Winemaking Equipment

If you’re thinking about making your own homemade wine, here are some things you should know about the winemaking equipment required to get you started.

First and foremost, we need to talk about cost. You could visit online merchants here, there and everywhere to shop around for the best prices on individual items you’ll need to start making your own wine, but most sites that sell equipment offer some sort of beginning equipment kit that will have all the items you need to get your wine making career started. This is absolutely the best way to go in my opinion. Kits will run anywhere from $80-$150. That’s a lot of money, but this equipment can be used over and ever and thus will eventually pay for itself.

So what’s included in a winemaking equipment kit, anyway? For starters you’ll get a plastic primary <a href="http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-fermentation.htm"target="_top"title="" >fermentation bucket, usually around 8 gallons. After primary fermentation you’ll need something to transfer your wine into for secondary fermentation. This is usually a 5 or 6 gallon glass bottle, called a carboy, although in some kits the secondary is plastic.

Also included will be some rubber stoppers that fit the fermenting vessels, and an airlock, which is a device used to let carbon dioxide out when your wine is fermenting while not allowing air and bacteria in. You should also get a couple of brushes, one for cleaning the bottles and another so you can clean the carboy.

Winemaking Equipment

Some sort of cleaning agent and also a sanitizer will be included. Cleaning and sanitizing is a crucial step when making wine. A length of plastic tubing will be supplied, and a sometimes a device called a racking tube which aids in transferring your wine from one vessel to the other. Some kits also include a little device to slip onto the plastic tube that allows you to shut off the flow of wine when you’re bottling.

Most kits include a hydrometer. This is a device that measures the specific gravity of the wine during various stages of development. You can also use it to measure the potential <a href="http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/drugs-alcohol/alcohol.htm"target="_top"title="" >alcohol of your wine. Corks are also in most winemaking equipment kits, as is some sort of corker to insert the corks.

This is the minimum list of items, and you’ll find some kits that include much more. What is generally NOT included is an ingredient kit, although some sellers will allow you to add one to your package for a reduced price and if you can afford it, this is a good way to go. Bottles are usually not included either, but are easy to collect from friends and family.

Consider getting started making your own homemade wine today. It’s a fun and fascinating hobby that you can explore endlessly.

The process of making homemade beer is a simple one and it’s easy to create tasteful and delicious beer. In general, you need some patience during the <a href="http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-fermentation.htm"target="_top"title="" >fermentation process, some general effort, enthusiasm and that should be it. With the right equipment and ingredients you will create the greatest beers.

#1 Equipment

The first step in this how to involves the equipment and material you need. Because without the right equipment your quest in the beer making process will fail. You can buy your equipment en ingredients separately in, for example, a home brew shop or you can buy all the materials in a, so called, microbrewery kit. For beginners we recommend to buy such a kit. Because you can be sure that you have everything you need and all of the ingredients for the first batch.

#2 Beer kit packages

As with all production processes, you need raw materials that will be the foundation for producing something else. In this case it is good to know that however materials and equipment are very important, the raw materials can all be easily bought as one single package readily available as home brewing kits also called beer kit packages.

Homemade Beer

These kits mainly contain:

- malt
- hops
- yeast
- fermentables/brewing Sugar
- carbonation Drops

It’s fast, easy and you save 10% over buying each product separately.

When you buy a microbrewery kit it also contains instruction manuals for the entire process, detailing each step for easy application. Having such a complete beer kit package can significantly help every beginner and you can use it for years, even if you have gained more experience the taste of these kits are so good it won’t be necessary to start with other recipes.

#3 Personality

It may sound a bit strange to talk about your personality in a brewing how to but it is one of the most important things you should be aware of. Brewing takes patience and commitment. It is a great activity with a great end result but only when you put some effort in to it. And lets face it, it is rewarding to come home from a long and stressful day and opening a bottle of your own home brewed beer. After you have taken your first steps on how to making homemade beer, and have gained some experience you can start with some experiments with the ingredients. And there will be a special how to for making homemade beer without a beer kit available.

Beer is the one of the most preferred <a href="http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/drugs-alcohol/alcohol.htm"target="_top"title="" >alcoholic beverages all over the world, and homemade beer is a specialty your friends and family will enjoy. Its nice to present you guests with something you have made yourself and that is exceptionally better then most beers bought in the shops. Soon you will be teaching how to make homemade beer to someone else.

An important part of successful beer making at home is using the proper equipment, ingredients, and keeping all of the equipment sanitized. Everything used in, on, or around your brew will affect the taste and flavor. So, it is important to keep all equipment sanitized when making the ingredients and using the mixture that is required to get the flavor that you want.

Many websites have different beer making recipes. Currently a person will find over a thousand beer making recipes on different websites. The recipe that a person selects can create a light beer, lager, or heavy ale. The mix and type of ingredients used in the recipe will impact the way that the beer comes out. When you have a flavor in mind for your beer, it is easy to change malts, grains, or hops in a recipe to create a unique flavor.

Beer Making Recipes

Some people feel that using malt extract is best for a beer recipe. Other people prefer to make their malt from a grain other than barley. Malt is used to activate the yeast that is key to fermenting your beer. By using different types of malt a person will be able to create different and unique tasting beer.

Water is a big part of the beer making recipe. Using filtered tap water that has been boiled is very popular with home brewers. This water is more affordable than other waters and the minerals in the beer add to it’s unique flavor. It is important to use water that has not had its minerals removed such as distilled water.

Grains used vary greatly. Most beer recipes use barley. However, a person can get a lighter tasting beer using corn or another grain. There is no rule about the hops, malts, or grains that make a good beer. The taste of beer is purely personal so you will want to experiment with the ingredients to find the recipe that works best for you.

Once you have found the recipe that looks like it will fit your taste and flavor requirements, make a small batch first. This will allow you to experiment and see what flavors will be best for your brewing efforts. Many people find that using a kit to make their first few batches of home brew is a great way to gain confidence in the effects of the beer making recipes that are available.

Homemade Fruit Wine

With a perfect blend of the freshest and sweetest fruits, strawberry wine is among the delicate and exquisite wines you can make at home. If you are unrelenting in making a strawberry wine, you should plan this in advance especially if you are thinking of serving this for a particular occasion because strawberry wines need to age for one year.

To start the homemade fruit wine making process, gather the needed ingredients. They include seven pounds of whole, freshly picked strawberry fruits. Wash them and hull. You will also need 2 gallons of boiling water, lemon juice and five pounds of sugar.

Homemade Fruit Wine

To begin the preparation, mash the strawberry fruits in a large crock, or any fitting casserole. Cover the mashed strawberries with boiling water. Add the lemon juice and stir the mixture quickly for around two minutes. You may set this aside, covering with a linen cloth. Rest the crock in a dark and cool area, and make sure to stir it everyday for a week.

After a week, purify the concoction through cheesecloth that is double layered and strain them in a large bowl, thoroughly discarding the strawberry pulp. Mix the strawberry liquid and the sugar, stirring them constantly until the sugar is dissolved. Pour into a container and let it stand for another week, still stirring daily.

When the second week is over, you may pour the homemade fruit wine into a gallon of wine bottle, preferably glass-made. Cork them loosely. Let it rest in a dark and cool place for about three months. When you see that the wine is no longer bubbling and perfectly clear, you may pour it into individual wine bottles, cork them and let them age for a year. By doing so, you will be serving and tasting a deliciously homemade strawberry wine. This recipe can yield about 40 servings or two gallons.

Homemade fruit wine may vary accordingly. You can choose to taste it semi sweet, lightly sweet or sour or completely sweet.

Strawberries provide favorable effects to one’s health. In addition to having low amount of calories and fats, these fruits are also rich in fiber, folate, antioxidants, potassium and vitamin C. compared to bananas, oranges and apples, they top as far as nutrient contents are concerned.

Apart from strawberry wine, the fruit can also be a perfect ingredient to make cereals, salads, yogurts, muffins, cakes and desserts. They can be eaten dried, frozen or fresh. Homemade fruit wine is fast and easy.

Other than the ingredients and the homemade wine kits that is used, the quality of the wines depend on many factors such as the production date, storage, and storage conditions.

Homemade Wine Making

Wine is one of the most popular drinks in the world, and has been drunk for centuries by all the countries of the world. Countries like France have become famous for drinking wine and when you think of France one the first thing you think of is wine. Wine can be drunk for many reasons and occasions from traditional celebrations to medicinal uses too.

Homemade wine making

is a fairly simple and a good option for you and the time to prepare the wine is quick. Remember when preparing to make your own wine at home is to study carefully and get as much knowledge as possible.

You can find many wine recipes online from the internet however it is important to select the correct one. You need to pick the right recipe based on the taste and whether it is healthy. Picking the right wine to make will also depend on for what function whether it is a barbecue or an evening dinner. Homemade wine making should be a passion of yours or at least you need to understand the basic rules and guidelines you need to follow.

Firstly you will need to buy a wine making kit; probably you will buy online in no time. Within the wine making kit you will find the operations or user manual, on here read carefully about your homemade wine making, taking more note of the <a href="http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-fermentation.htm"target="_top"title="" >fermentation process as this is the key to a good wine. Read from start top end before starting and if you not sure contact the supplier or read for more information online.

To make wine you will require some patience as the overall process can take 4 to 10 days and once this is completed you still are required to do secondary fermentation and then the racking of the wine.

In the process of racking you are aiming to remove the sedimentation from the wines and finally the last step will be the bottling of the wine. You will need to concentrate on the bottling and if requested use small tubes. After all this process is complete you need to let the wine rest for a few days at least, to ensure the wine can settle to the best way, now all you need are wine glasses so you can share with your friends.

When it comes to homemade wine making you will need to take it step by step and have patience along the journey, once completed you can savor the lovely taste and aroma that will come from your wine.

Homebrew Recipe

Creating a homebrew recipe is not just a cost effective way to brew beer, it’s also a lot of fun. To start creating your own brew doesn’t require too much technical knowledge. You can buy a ready-made-kit from your local brewing suppliers and this contains everything that you need to get started.

So what do you need to get started?

Well, first off you need your ingredients and these will be provided in your kit. These ingredients will consist of your grain (malt), hops and your yeast. You will also need water to boil your ingredients. Now water is very important in the brewing process, I suggest that you filter your water or use bottled water for your brewing. The reason for this is that hard water from your tap can create a bad tasting and bad smelling beer, so to avoid this use the advice above.

Homebrew Recipe

Next you will need some equipment:

5 Gallon pot – For boiling your beer.

Large metal spoon – To stir your beer.

6.5 gallon Fermenting Bucket.

6.5 gallon Bottling Bucket with spiket (tap).

Bottle Brush – To clean any grime and dirt.

Airlock – Goes on top of the fermenting bucket, and helps newly formed gases to escape the bucket to reduce pressure.

Bottle Capper – To cap all the bottles of your new batch of beer.

Racking Cane – To siphon beer from container to container.

Plastic Tubing – This is attached to the racking cane to aid in the siphoning process.

Bottling Tip – Spring loaded bottom which controls the flow of beer into the bottles.

Hydrometer – Measures the progress of your beer and also provides you with the <a href="http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/drugs-alcohol/alcohol.htm"target="_top"title="" >alcoholic content.

Thermometer – Measures the temperature of the beer.

And there you go, you have your ingredients and your equipment to start brewing up a storm… and then maybe not remember it, and that’s the fun of brewing your own homebrew.

Once you have done a few kits you can start to source your own ingredients and start being creative with your own homebrew recipe.

Darren is a homebrew enthusiast and enjoys the process of choosing ingredients all the way through to the final tasting on a nice comfortable couch. Follow Darren on his journey through the home brewing process and learn the highs and lows of producing your first batch.

Normally, those who are into <a href="http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/drugs-alcohol/alcohol.htm"target="_top"title="" >alcoholic beverages and wines, or the likes get their ‘poison’ from the wine shop. But imagine if you were able to get the feel of how it will be in a wine yard in California or lets say Ireland, wouldn’t it be awesome? Grape wine making is all about picking those perfect grapes and the right <a href="http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-fermentation.htm"target="_top"title="" >fermentation process. But that’s about it for now, because I don’t want to spill the beans about the interesting grape wine making recipe!

Grape Wine Making Recipe

Cork #1 – From Scratch
Here is an easy grape wine recipe. If you want to start from scratch, then you would have to begin by picking grapes in the concerned season. After you pick the grapes, get rid of the leaves and trash, but leave stems on the grapes as far as possible. If at all you have to store them avoid using a metal container. Read more on make your own wine.

Cork #2 – Crushing Blow
Get around 6 pounds of grapes to make 2 bottles of wine. Then crush the grapes or may be you can use a juicer to take the grape juice. A very important thing to remember here is that don’t throw the skin in case you are making red or rose wine. Put them in the juice. Believe it or not tanning in the skin helps ferment wine better.

Cork #3 – Strain It
After you get the juice, strain the juice and measure the sugar level using the hydro meter. The maximum sugar the juice can have is equal 1.0982 specific gravity. In addition to that, the fruit should have a natural sweet and tart taste. If the specific gravity is not up to the mark, no need to worry, you can always add the sugar. Put the crushed grapes in a plastic ice chest having a drain plug on the bottom of the ice chest while you are going about grape wine making at home.

Cork #4 – Time to Ferment
Once the juice is kept in the ice chest, close the lid on the chest and then let it ferment for 8 to 10 days. Prevent disturbing or moving the grapes. The hulls will be seen now floating on top of the juice. Once you see that, drain the juice from the ice chest in glass or plastic containers. Then put juice in a clean glass or a plastic jug having a small top. Then put it in a separate glass or plastic bowl for dissolving the sugar with 2 gallons of distilled water or grape juice. Add some yeast culture if you have some. But for doing that you would need to warm the juice to around 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature can be a bit less or more but make sure it is not more than 80 degrees. As far as homemade grape wine making recipe and grape wine making is concerned, this is a very crucial stage.

Cork #5 – High Spirits

After this first leg of fermentation is done, take the juice and pour it in a barrel or a carboy. Fill it in a manner that there is no space and it is air tight. Keep the wine as it is and forget about it, for a month or two. After a couple of months, you can bottle the wine. Let the bottles be clean and sterilized. Then pour the wine in the bottle and store it in a dark and cool room. There is a possibility, that though you do all this, it might not taste like the wine you would have tasted generally. Professionals while going about grape wine making play with the temperature and yeast to get that perfect brew. Moreover, the oak barrels impart their own magic to the wine, making them a favorite amongst wine makers for a grape wine making recipe.

A lot of things eventually contribute and determine that impeccable aroma and taste in a grape wine making recipe – the grapes, the soil and the climate too. It is fun though, to try it out at home if it does not turn out to be a fabulous Chardonnay or Zinfandel!

So all set to brew with high spirits?

When you think of wine making, grapes come to mind. But, not so fast. Other fruits can equally be used to make wine. In the past few years, home wine making has seen a huge increase in popularity and people are making wine with grapes and with other fruits.

The good thing is that making wine from other fruits is the same process as making wine from grapes. There is only a slight difference on the things you lay emphasis on. For example you would have to make adjustments in the sugar content and acid levels when working with other fruits. Since you can make wine from grapes effortlessly, going one or two more extra steps is not a big deal for most wine makers. Those who have made wine from other fruits than grape say it is worth the effort.

Making Fruit Wine

The big question is which fruits can you use? The answer is basically any fruit. The popular ones for making wine includes peaches, watermelons, plums, strawberries, blackberries, pears, grapefruits, persimmons, gooseberries, boysenberries and much more. Just like any new experience it would take some practice to fully figure out the best approach to get the wine just the way you like it.

The initial step in making wine from other fruits starts with the same basic principles used when using grapes. You must evaluate the fruit. And always remember that the wine produced is only as good as the fruit it was made from. The take home message here is to pay close attention to the fruit you are using.

When picking your fruits, avoid fruits with excessive number of bruises and or molds. Always make sure that the fruits you use are ripe. Unripe fruits tend to produce wine that is lacking in character. As you already know, before crushing, wash the fruit thoroughly.

Depending on how you like your wine, you might need to dilute the fruit with some water to get the best wine out of it. This is because certain types of fruits are naturally already too strong and would need to be diluted. Others may have an acidity level that is too high which would result in the wine having a very sharp taste. Example of a fruit that would not require any dilution is apple. Actually you can use pure apple juice, as is, without any worries. However, fruits like gooseberries and blueberries must be diluted. They have very high acidity and when used undiluted to make wine, produce wine with that sharp taste.

There is no single right formula on the amount of fruit to use for making fruit wine. However, the amount of fruit you use depends on the outcome you are looking for. If you want to produce wine that is light and crisp, then you should use less fruit, while the opposite applies if you are looking at producing a sweeter and heavier wine such as a dessert wine.

To adjust the sugar level in the fruit you are using for your making fruit wine, a hydrometer comes in handy. A hydrometer is a tool familiar to any winemaker and it is used to determine the level of sugar in the juice, and how much <a href="http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/drugs-alcohol/alcohol.htm"target="_top"title="" >alcohol you could get from those levels. It comes as a tube of glass with a floating weight on one end. You place the tube into the juice and read off the sugar level by how high or low the hydrometer floats in the juice. There is a meter on the hydrometer that will indicate the alcohol potential.

Another thing you would need to monitor is the acidity of the juice. Different juices have different acid level. There are two ways in which you can check the acid levels. One is to use a litmus paper or PH testing strip, while the other method is the use of a titration kit. Using a litmus paper is a very fast and cheap way, but, it is not very accurate. The titration method is a much better way to check acidity and taste, and the results pretty accurate. If for any reason you need to adjust the acidity level, you could use either of three different fruit acids. They are malic acid, citric and tartaric acid, and could be purchased as a blend known as the acid blend.
